1992 Corvette Production and Performance

- The LT1 engine debuts for 1992 producing 300 hp and 330 lb-ft or torque. This new engine uses reverse flow cooling which is the first time this type of cooling has been used by Chevrolet. The system is engineered to direct coolant directly to the heads of the engine instead of directing it from the water pump, to the engine block and then into the heads. By using this type of cooling, higher bore temperatures and reduce ring friction were achieved as well as incrased cooling around the spark plug bosses and valve seats. An automatic fuel shut-off was employed to stop fuel delivery at 5,850 RPM. The LT1 engine weighting in at 452 lbs, was approximately 20 lbs heavier than the L98 engine. Increased power output was attributed to lower restriction exhaust using two catalytic converters and two oxygen sensors, high compression ratio, computer controlled ignition timing, free-flow cylinder heads and a new multiport fuel injection system. Mobil 1 Synthetic oil was factory fill for both the LT1 and LT5 engines.
- A new traction control system called "Acceleration Slip Regulation" (ASR) was used on all 1992 Corvettes. Depending upon the amount of wheel slip detected, the system used a combination of engine spark retard, throttle shut-down and brake use to decrease the slip. The system could be deactivated via a switch on the upper left hand side of the dashboard above the headlight knob.
- Goodyear GSC tires replaced the Goodyear Gatorbacks used in previous model years. The GSC design was both asymmetrical and directional.
- Numerous interior and exterior improvements were incorporated: improved weather stripping, additional door and transmission tunnel insulation was added to reduce road noise, "ZR-1" emblems were added to ZR-1 models above the side gill panels, instrument buttons were changed to all black and gauge graphics were refined for better visibility, digital speedometer was relocated above the fuel gauge, and the power delay features was modified so that the passenger side door also cut power to the accessories
- RPO Z07 was available with either automatic or manual transmissions and included RPO FX3, heavy duty suspension components and heavy duty brakes.
- RPO ZR1 included RPOs AC1, AC3, AQ9, C68, D4L, FX3, UJ6, U1F, and LT5 as well as a specially laminated "solar ray" windshield in order to keep interior temperatures down.
- The one millionth Corvette rolled off the assembly line on July 2, 1992 and currently resides in the National Corvette Museum.
