A control lock tube housing cover has recently been incorporated into the 1969 Corvette steering column, both standard and Tilt-Telescoping types, as shown in Figure 44.  This cover is intended to prevent the lock tube housing from being rotated and subsequent damage to the control cable.

The following steps in the 1969 Passenger Car Chassis Service Manual should be revised:

On Page 9-14, Step 10 of the procedures for ’Disassembly - All Except Tilt and Tilt-Telescoping Columns; should appear as follows:

10.  Remove the gearshift lever housing and shroud from the jacket assembly (transmission control lock tube housing and shroud on floor shift models).

Corvette - If either the shroud or housing cover are damaged, remove the retaining screw and slide the cover off the shroud.

On Page 9-17, Step 7 of the procedures for ’Assembly - All Except Tilt and Tilt-Telescoping’ should appear as follows:

7.  Install the shift tube lock plate and spring into the gearshift lever (or lock tube) housing and install the cover onto the shroud (Corvette).  Install the housing and shroud assemblies onto the upper end of the mast jacket.  Rotate the housing to be sure it is seated in the bearing.

On Page 9-21, Step 17 of the procedures for ’Disassembly - Tilt and Tilt-Telescoping Columns’ should appear as follows:

17.  All Columns - Remove the shift lever housing from the mast jacket (transmission control lock tube housing on floor shift models).  Remove the shift lever spring by winding the spring up with pliers and pulling it out.  on floor shift models, remove the spring plunger. 

Tilt-Telescoping Columns - Pry the transmission control lock tube housing cover tabs out of the slots in the housing extension and remove the cover.  Remove the three housing extension screws and remove the housing extension.

On Page 9-22, Step 2 of the procedures for ’Assembly - Tilt and Tilt-Telescoping Columns’ should appear as follows:

2.  All Columns - Install the shift lever spring into the housing by winding it up with pliers and pushing it into the housing.  On floor shift models, install the plunger.

Tilt-Columns - Slide the gearshift lever housing onto the mast jacket.

Tilt-Telescoping Columns - Install the transmission control lock tube housing extension and torque the screws to 40 in. lbs .  Install the housing cover onto the extension.  Install the housing onto the mast jacket assembly.
