In order to eliminate possible bearing failure due to the steering shaft lower spring end catching in the steering shaft lower bearing, a new spacer located between the spring and bearing entered production approximately February 1, 1963.
If this problem is encountered in early vehicles not equipped with the spacer, Par No. 3840897 Spacer should be installed as shown in the illustration below.
