Subject:  Corvette Body Source Identification
Model and Year: 1964 Corvette
Source: Chevrolet Central Office Letter
Origin No: SER-0-22
C.O. No: 64-131
Date: February 13, 1964

TO:  REGIONAL AND ZONE SERVICE MANAGERS

Starting with January production, Corvette bodies are being manufactured by two sources -- Chevrolet-St. Louis and A.O. Smith Corporation.  Effective with Corvette serial number 109678, the identification of the body source is made by prefixing the body number with the letter "S" for St. Louis source, and the letter "A" for A.O. Smith corporation source.  There is no prefix to the body number of earlier units.

All L&MR’s submitted for Corvette body repair should include the complete body number information, allowing proper allocation of failures to the related source.  The body identification plate location can be determined through reference to TSB #920, DR #615, dated September 16, 1963.

This information should be transmitted to all dealers for their use in completing L&MR’s.

Very truly yours,

M.L. Moore

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
