Subject: Low Tire Pressure Message Repeatedly Displayed on DIC, Slow Air Loss From Tire and Wheel Assembly (Replace Wheel Assembly)
Model Year: 2000 Chevrolet Corvette Built prior to VIN Breakpoint Y5001500
Condition
Some customers may comment on a repeated occurrence of having a low tire pressure message displayed on the Driver Information Center for a specific tire and wheel location.
Cause
Wheels that exhibit a repeat leak down condition may have been machined in such a manner that the valve stem/tire pressure sensor counterbore is too deep, resulting in air leakage past the sensor’s seal.
Correction
With the tire and valve stem/tire pressure monitor removed from the suspect wheel, place a penny in the counterbore where the valve stem/tire pressure monitor seats on the inside of the wheel. If the penny sits in the counterbore so that it is below the unmachined surface of the wheel at the points indicated by the arrows in the illustration (counterbore depth more than 1.1 mm (.043 in), replace the wheel assembly with the appropriate service part indicated in the chart below.
