2005 - 2006 Corvette: Recall: Power Steering Hose Fracture

Recall #: 05086

Date: October 6, 2005

Subject:  Power Steering Hose Fracture

Model(s):

2005 Chevrolet Corvette VIN#s: 55132486 - 55135514
2006 Chevrolet CorvetteVIN#s: 65100198 - 65100359

Condition
Some vehicles were shipped with a high pressure power steering hose manufactured with an incorrect compound making the hose susceptible to high pressure failure when exposed to the elevated hydraulic fluid temperatures and pressures that can occur during simultaneous braking and steering inputs. When sufficient fluid is lost, power assist for steering is no longer available and vehicle directional control will depend on manual steering efforts.

In addition, braking assist will be limited to the reserve power assist system if the vehicle is equipped with the Hydroboost braking system. The braking systems on vehicles without Hydroboost are unaffected by this condition. There also is a possibility that leaking power steering fluid could flow onto the surface of exhaust system components where surface temperatures could exceed the ignition temperature of the fluid and could result in a fire without prior warning.

Correction
To correct this condition, dealers are to inspect power steering hose assemblies for specific date codes and replace suspect hoses with new parts currently released for production. These repairs will be made at no charge to customers.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
