[THROWBACK THURSDAY] Bruce Springsteen and his 1960 Corvette

For our Throwback Thursday series, it doesn’t get much better than “The Boss” and his 1960 Corvette!

Bruce Springsteen bought this beautiful Tuxedo Black 1960 Corvette in 1975 from a local ice cream stand attendant after his Born To Run album hit #3 on the Billboard 200 and catapulted “The Boss” to worldwide fame.

Born To Run had earned me a Steinway baby grand piano and a 1960 Chevrolet Corvette I bought for six grand from a kid behind the counter,”

Frank Stefanko shot this photo of “The Boss” and his Corvette on a cold winter day back in 1978. Nearly 40 years later, Bruce Springsteen chose to adorn the cover of his autobiography, Born to Run with this photo.

Back in 1960

1960 turned out to be a tumultuous year as the U.S. enters the Vietnam War and John F. Kennedy wins the presidential election. Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” became a new dance sensation and aluminum cans became the mainstream soda pop containers.

The cost for a gallon of gas was only 0.25 cents and the cost of a new car averaged $2,600.  How times have changed!

Highlights of the 1960 Corvette

While 1960 was the beginning of major change for the U.S., the Corvette continued chugging along into the hearts of Americans.

This was the first year that select Corvettes would see the introduction of aluminum cylinder heads and aluminum radiators.  The aluminum radiators were limited to the 270 hp and 290 hp Corvettes only.

Starting MSRP actually decreased to $3,872 which was $3.00 less than the 1959 Corvette.  You don’t see that happen too often!

Production of the Corvette in 1960 hit 10,261, up from the previous year’s 9,670 units with Bruce’s 1960 Corvette being one of 1,268 built in Tuxedo Black that year.
