It definitely has been a busy week in the Corvette world!
First, we saw a couple mid-engine prototypes stopping at McDonalds for a Happy Meal, then GM announced yesterday that the 2018 model year is getting cut short next month when orders will no longer be accepted for 2018 Corvettes, and now, we have some of the best photos we’ve ever seen of the mid-engine Corvette thanks to Road and Track magazine.
Yesterday, three mid-engine Corvette prototypes were caught testing out on the open roads of southwestern Michigan with a Porsche 911 Turbo S – one of Porsche’s quickest cars.
With 580 Hp, 516 lb-ft. of torque, and an all-wheel drive system, Porsche’s $200,000+ road rocket is capable of hitting 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds. Not bad company to keep if Corvette Engineering is truly using this Porsche to benchmark the mid-engine Corvette against.
We can tell the red Bavarian rocket was privately owned because of the Manufacturer plates that can be seen on the back of the car. Automotive manufacturers frequently purchase the competition’s products in order to compare them, and in some cases, rip them apart in order to see how they’re put together. In the past, GM has purchased various Porsche models to use for testing purposes, so chances are, there’s a Chevrolet engineer behind the wheel of this one!
The spy photos captured here (as well as a quick little video of mid-engine Corvette in motion on the road) give us our best view yet of the overall shape of the car, as well as the unique wheel design, and squared off quad tail pipes that are pushed out to the outer corners of the rear-end – unlike the past three generations of Corvette where they’ve been directly in the center.
