Police say a homeless man who happened upon a convertible Corvette with the keys in the ignition took the car for a spin to a local strip club.

The victim, a 46-year-old Beecher man, left his red 1981 Corvette with an open top parked in front of the Chicago Heights police department on Halsted Street with the keys in the ignition Aug. 14. When he returned, the car was missing and police dispatch broadcasted the theft. A police officer on patrol immediately spotted the car traveling eastbound on 14th Street from Hill Top Avenue and stopped the man at Division Street.

The driver, 39-year-old Cortez Tarver, said he saw the keys in the ignition and just wanted to “check it out” and then spent several minutes playing with the radio before deciding to drive it to Jimmy’s Gentleman’s Club, 401 W. 14th St., when he was stopped by police.
