Cancer survivors from different generations bond over love for Corvettes

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) — Any car enthusiast could tell you that a good car can stand the test of time.

“I’ve been building cars for the last 50 years,” said Vince Sica, a member of East Tennessee Corvette Club.

So, Sica knows of what tough stuff is made.

“Two years ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer,” he added.

Really tough stuff.

Now, cancer-free, he puts his time into two things: collecting Corvettes and helping others like Phillip battle through the disease.

“It was surprising but I was pretty hopeful that God would help me,” said Phillip, whose family preferred we don’t disclose his last name.

The 13-year-old was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer in January.

“Phillip’s a Corvette, muscle car, Camaro nut,” said Sica.

One enthusiast can tell another, just like perfecting the perfect car, the journey along the healing process doesn’t always start without some stalls.

“We have a 1958 Corvette over there that drives like a truck,” said Sica, pointing across the parking lot.

In the early stage of Phillip’s diagnosis, doctors didn’t give him much of a chance.

But, after a few bumps in the road and a little more time, just like the 1966 Corvette in the parking lot, Sica said, “it drives a little better.”

Things started to rev up and Phillip finished his last proton treatment Tuesday.

“I have more time to live,” he said.

Time to turn off the road of treatment and onto the road to recovery.

Proving that the newest models still have the best pieces of the originals.

“The new one drives like a dream,” Sica will be the first to confirm.

Whatever his next dream, Phillip is in the driver’s seat.
