Design Engineering’s Floor and Tunnel Shield II is a redesign of DEI’s earlier product of the same name.
The goal is simple: reflect heat away from floor panels, brake lines, electrical components and other parts of a car which are better off running cooler.
I’ve used the stuff for years on underside of Corvette footwells, floor panels and transmission tunnels to reflect heat from catylitic converters and other exhaust parts. I’ve also used it to reflect heat away from brake and clutch lines. I’ve put it on the side of starter motors to reflect heat from exhaust parts.
The product is easy to use. I use a tape measure to determine the size and shape of the area I want to protect. I use a Sharpie to mark the roll of Floor and Tunnel Shield. Then I use a pair of small shears to cut the product. Finally, I peel off the adhesive’s backing and stick the Shield on the part I want to protect.
Floor and Tunnel Shield II will withstand 1750° direct heat. The 10-mil aluminum is the reflective part. Under that is a 1/8-in thick glass-fiber core. The adhesive can withstand 450°F. Total thickness is 3/16-in and it can be easily shaped and trimmed.
Recently, I used Floor and Tunnel Shield II on a 2012 Corvette Z06 as a thermal barrier between the driver side catalytic converter and the brake lines running along the driver-side frame rail. I also used it on the passenger side to protect the starter motor. Finally, I used two long strips of it on the sides of the transmission tunnel to reflect heat radiated by the exhaust system mid-section.
Two of the great features of this product are: 1) it’s easy to cut and 2) it sticks like crazy once it’s installed.
