FOR RELEASE: July 6, 2002 Corvette Racing - ALMS Qualifying SessionROAD AMERICA Round No. 4 of 10 - American Le Mans Series
Qualifying for the first ever American Le Mans Series event, The Road America 500, provided all drivers with a clear track and very little obstruction as the field was able to spread out over the full four mile circuit. The bad news was the long lap distance limited the drivers to fewer than normal opportunities to cut the perfect lap. "I scared myself a little bit on that last lap," said Ron Fellows describing his pole winning lap in the No. 3 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet Corvette. We had a bit of a challenge among our drivers based on who could go through the kink best. First, there was a little lift… then a tiny lift… and finally no lift. The last time through I got a little tail wiggle that tells me that I’ve maybe reached the limit." "The track was very slick," said Fellows, "and I thought we would slow down but the Goodyear tires they brought for us were perfect. I can’t thank Goodyear enough for all the good work they have done. The Corvette was perfect." It was four poles in the first four races for Fellows in the ALMS series in 2002. He also leads the GTS group in driver points. Fellows, along with co-driver Johnny O’Connell, have three GTS wins in the series this year. Catching the second fastest GTS lap was Andy Pilgrim in the No. 4 Corvette team car. "The car was pushing very badly," said Pilgrim "but I think it will be a good race car. When you start with a bit of a push, you may lose time at first, but as the tires wear you go the other way. I’m not worried, we’ll be all right tomorrow." Corvette is defending GTS class champion in the American Le Mans Series winning six of 10 races in 2001 plus Daytona and le Mans 24 hour races. TOP QUALIFYING TIMES
